In an era where rising gas costs have consumers desperate for a means to slash their fuel bills, Ford is responding to the current economic conditions by developing a new ‘super charged’ 3-cylinder engine which is projected to push fuel economy on select Ford vehicles to 50 MPG or even more.

This 1.0 liter engine is still in development at Ford’s technical center, located in the United Kingdom, and is set to be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Although 3-cylinder engines have shown to be problematic when applied to the automotive industry in the past, Ford engineers are reporting that they have overcome the problems previously encountered with this type of engine.

They claim that the 1.0 liter 3-cylinder engine will perform at the same level as the current 1.6 liter 4-cylinder engine.
